PEOPLE DO BUSINESS
WITH PEOPLE.
It started 40 years ago with one simple belief. Four decades later, that same philosophy is carrying world-leading electric and robotic technology from the Hutt Valley to a global market.

JT Group was founded by Joe Tomlinson as a belief that relationships matter. Four decades on, it’s a business with world-leading technology, a sustainability programme ahead of it’s industry, and international ambitions grounded in local innovation. What hasn’t changed is the foundation: people, doing business with people.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Where it began: a simple idea.
JT Group was founded by Joe Tomlinson, Ray’s father, with a belief that has guided the business ever since: people do business with people.
It sounds simple. but in an industry where providers can feel interchangeable, where the lowest quote often wins, that idea is quietly radical. it means showing up differently, building relationships that last not six months but decades, and being seen not as a vendor, but as a partner.
"He always said people do business with people. That has been the core of our business, that we have trusting relationships with out clients. We’re actually seen as a partner with their business, rather than just another service provider."
— Ray Tomlinson - Director, JT Group
WHAT WE DO
Site Solutions Specialists.
We began as JT Property Wash, focussed on exterior building washing across that wellington and Hutt Valley region. In 2020, we rebranded to JT Group to better reflect our evolution into an owner-operator model and our growing range of services. Our legal name J. Tomlinson & Co Limited, has remained constant throughout.
Today, JT Group operates across four core areas:
Exterior building washing
Internal cleaning
Concrete solutions
Sustainability & environmental compliance
With 12 Owner Operators, 63 field staff, and 6 office staff completing around 200 jobs per month, we bring a consistent, accountable standard of service to every site we work on.
THE TEAM
The team that makes it work.
Long-term relationships don’t happen by accident. Behind every one is a tea, that does what it says it’s going to do. Consistently, over years and decades. One JT Group team has been with the business since 1985: forty years of showing up and delivering.
That consistency compounds. Some of JT Group’s client relationships span 40 years, built not on contracts but on trust earned through performance, visit after visit, report after report.
“The key to JT Group’s success over all these years has been the team, right from the office to the field. We have delivered what we said we were going to do”
THE CHALLENGE
An industry that needed to change.
Building washing is a water-intensive industry. For years, little thought was given to where the water went, until the people doing the work started asking harder questions. For Ray, the trigger was personal. A keen triathlete, he spent years swimming in Wellington Harbour, the same harbour that received the runoff from the buildings he was washing.
That observation, more than 30 years ago, became the seed of JT Group’s sustainability programme.
“I was washing buildings and noticing all the wastewater going down the drain. Then I’’m swimming in Wellington Harbour realising, hold on, I’m actually swimming in the stuff that I’ve just washed.”
THE SOLUTION
Ahead of the curve on sustainability.
What started as a personal observation has become a fully embedded part of how the business operates, a comprehensive programme spanning four fronts: water consumption reduction, wastewater management, noise pollution, and carbon emission savings.
518,616kg ~164,480L
CO2 saved since May 2023. Water saved per year via brush machine technology
Water reduction
Cutting consumption through waterless and water-saving systems.
Wastewater management
Capturing and disposing of runoff so it never reaches the harbour.
Noise pollution
Electric machinery quiet enough to run in occupied, built-up areas.
Carbon savings
Battery-electric operation replacing fossil-fuelled equipment.
“Fast forward to today and it’s becoming more and more of a requirement. We’re already ahead of the game.”
THE INNOVATION
World-leading technology, built for global markets.
JT Group has spent the last decade investing in technology that doesn’t yet exist anywhere else in the world. Battery-electric building-wash machines. Robotic systems. technology developed in the Hutt Valley, designed to clean large buildings at scale with a fraction of the environmental impact of conventional methods.
It’s already changing how building maintenance is done in New Zealand. But the ambition goes further.
“It’s not only changing things here in New Zealand, we’re looking at international.”
THE RESULT
Four decades, and still accelerating.
JT Group was built on a belief that relationships matter. Today it’s a businesses with world-leading technology, a sustainability programme ahead of it’s industry, and international ambitions grounded in local innovation. What hasn’t changed is the foundation.
The clients who have been with JT Group for 30 and 40 years aren’t staying out of inertia, they’re staying because JT Group keeps delivering, keeps evolving, and keeps showing up as a genuine partner.
“That’s what 40 years of people doing business with people looks like.”
